I remember my first foray into Digital Technology. I was a teacher and I wanted to use a DVD player. I was quite excited, as I had never used one before.
I wheeled in the large TV set into the classroom and held up a DVD.
“Guess what, we’re watching a film today!” I exclaimed. Students were excited. I had chosen a film new to everyone.
I opened the cover to the DVD player. The buttons seemed obvious. I hit the ‘load’ button and nothing happened.
“What have I done wrong?” I muttered to myself. Panicking, I wondered whether I had broken the damn thing.
“Switch it on, sir,” a student helpfully advised.
“How?”
“Press the ‘on’ button.”
And there it was, right in front of me. In my excitement, I had missed it completely.
I tried again. Lights came on, and the ‘load’ button promptly ejected the tray I needed.
For me, I had learnt a valuable lesson. Regardless of my lack of experience, there would always be someone to guide and support me.
Even a student.
Time has marched on, and I daresay I have become quite the techno-expert. But there’s always a learning curve and all I need to do is press that button and see.
